and sudo update-grub will only install the most recent version of the OS to the partition and not to the MBR. I have the same problem. The upgrade is set to download and install security updates only. Thats fine, but the only updates it download/installs are the current install, and then it tries to install the latest ISO, and fails. I have tried the manual approach where I changed the /etc/apt/sources.list file and it doesn’t work either. Do you have any idea how I can bypass this without having to wait for the laptop to be fixed? I have a week. I have a problem with the upgrade from 14.04. I have already upgraded to 16.04 from the desktop after it was released. When I did a quick update everything went fine. Today I did a full upgrade and the system got stuck on the “Installation type” screen of the installer. There was no error message and no indication on why the installation would not continue. After waiting for 15 min. I tried to “cancel” the upgrade but that did not do the trick. Help and thoughts would be greatly appreciated. (edited) I decided to do a fresh install of 16.04 but the problem persists. I checked the media and no 16.04 ISO is in the list. Then I proceeded to install 16.04 and that worked fine.
